Woman dies after Wilmington attack; second deadly attack in city in one week

A 31-year-old woman has been charged in connection with a Wilmington robbery that left another woman dead last week.

City police were called to the 200 block of N. Lombard St. just after 9 p.m. on Oct. 24 after receiving reports of an unresponsive woman. There they found 49-year-old Lisa Fakis seriously injured.

She was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Through their investigation, detectives learned that Fakis had been attacked during a robbery. The department did not say how she was attacked or whether a weapon was used.

After an “area search,” police arrested Laverne Sealey and charged her in the attack, the department said. She is charged with first-degree robbery and second-degree assault.

She is being held at the Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution on $140,000 cash-only bail.

Wilmington police said investigators are “working with the Delaware Department of Justice to increase her charges in connection with this incident.”

Second deadly attack in the city in less than a week

Fakis was the second person killed in an attack in Wilmington last week.

The first, 60-year-old Edward Wiggins, was attacked in the 2100 block of N. Market St. on Oct. 20 around 2 p.m.

A brief news release issued two days after Wiggins’ death did not say when police learned of the attack or what he was attacked with. Police also did not provide details about the circumstances of the attack and did not indicate whether it was a random or targeted attack.
