A Canton teen died in what a witness described as an armed robbery. His father disagrees

CANTON – Rajhion Davis, 18, was shot and killed last week during a street confrontation that also hospitalized a 19-year-old woman.

A witness told police that Davis was trying to commit an armed robbery when he was shot during the altercation near 10th Street and High Avenue NW, according to a witness. Police report.

Davis’ father, Rajhi Davis Sr., disputes that account. He said his son sold street drugs, but he sees no reason why he would commit a robbery.

“My son wasn’t a bad guy. “I didn’t like how they did that,” he said. “(It makes) my son look like he was a straight-up murderer.”

His son’s funeral is scheduled for Friday at Rhoden Funeral Home at 729 Cherry Ave. NE. The visit will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a celebration of life at 11 a.m

Canton police say the case is still under investigation

Police this week declined to release additional information about the shooting or indicate whether anyone could be charged. The shooting is still under investigation by the detective bureau.

The incident is the second gun-related homicide of the year.

According to the police report, Davis was sitting in the passenger seat of a car with another person when they saw the 19-year-old woman walking with one of her friends and Davis made comments apparently related to whether they were using drugs.

The 19-year-old then approached and Davis got out of the car. The woman’s friend told police that Davis asked the woman for her belongings. The woman pushed Davis, who then allegedly put a gun to her head, according to the friend’s account to police.

Davis’ father doesn’t believe that version of events.

“My son had $3,000 on him,” he said. “Why would my son try to rob (her)?”

The police report indicates the woman was shot by Davis during a physical struggle that was captured on video. The woman also pulled out a gun and started shooting at Davis before walking away.

“Apparently I don’t know if she shot my son first and he shot back, no matter how it turned out,” he said. “It doesn’t make any sense.”

Father claims there is more to it

Davis Sr. doesn’t believe his son would resort to violence without reason.

“When you’re in that kind of business, you need to keep a gun pointed at you,” he said. “He probably felt threatened.”

He also said he believes his son’s friends played a role in the shooting, noting how the driver dropped off other passengers miles away before taking his son to his cousin’s home.

“To me it sounds like his own friends framed him…,” he said. “My son went into his cousin’s house, fell to the ground and said, ‘I’ve been shot.’ Why didn’t you take my son to the (expletive) hospital that was down the street?”

Davis Sr. said his son had a lot of potential.

“He was working, going to school and about to graduate this year,” he said. “He (wanted) to get into the oil field… He wanted to be something.”

Davis Sr. said he hopes new information will emerge that will paint a clearer picture of what happened.

“My son can’t speak for himself,” he said.
