Police units arrest 98 suspects, recover vehicles and a firearm

Rapid Response Services, comprising Flying Squad, K9 Units and Highway Patrol members across Gauteng, arrested 98 suspects between October 18 and 24, recovering 62 motor vehicles and one firearm.

Officers took part in several concentrated operations, vehicle checkpoints, secure escorts and intensive patrols around Gauteng.

These operations have resulted in 39 arrests for serious crimes including assault and GBH, armed robbery, common robbery, fraud, theft, possession of stolen property, home invasion, rape, murder, perjury, use of a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent, malicious damage to property and kidnapping.

Other crimes include violating a protective order, illegal immigration, shoplifting, bribery, defeating the ends of justice, possession of illegal cigarettes, motor vehicle theft and driving under the influence of alcohol.

A total of 62 hijacked and stolen motor vehicles were recovered, including 19 arrests for possession of these vehicles.

One unlicensed firearm was found.

Further police surveillance led to 40 arrests for drug possession and trafficking.

Heroin, dagga, cat (cocaine), Mandrax and crystal methamphetamine were among the products seized in these separate incidents.

In these cases the investigation continues.

The suspects will appear before local magistrates’ courts across Gauteng.
