Sophie Turner says she and ex Joe Jonas had a ‘beautiful relationship’ before things fell apart

As exciting and dazzling as her romance with Jonas Brothers singer and solo star was Joe Jonas was, look back on it now Sophie Turner can give you an idea of what went wrong. In a new Harper’s Bazaar Profile Women of the year 2024, the first Game of Thrones actress said her upcoming 2025 psychological thriller To trust – in which she plays an actress on the run after a high-profile internet scandal – “really reflected my life over the past year.”

She said filming the movie was a very “redemptive” experience and a chance to “express some serious anger, which was fun.” The end for her was not so nice four year marriage with Jonas, whom she married in 2019 in a Las Vegas wedding overseen by an Elvis impersonator that was live-streamed by Diplo.

The couple went on to have two children together, daughters Willa and Delphine, before Jonas filed for divorce in September 2023, saying their marriage was “irretrievably broken” and asking for shared custody of their children. Asked what went wrong in the high-profile relationship that saw the glamorous jet-setting couple light up red carpets around the world during their wedding?

“I’m currently going through a legal process where I can’t really say much, but it’s been incredibly sad. We had a beautiful relationship, and it was hard,” Turner said of the highs of the marriage and the lows of its dissolution. One of the reported points of contention in their split was Turner’s wish for their girls to grow up in her native England, and now that she’s back in Britain she told the magazine that her life feels like it’s back on track.

“I’m so happy to be back. It felt like my life was on pause until I returned to England,” she said. “I just never really feel like myself when I’m not in London with my friends and family. I was away for so long – six years – and that was when my friends got engaged and when I got pregnant. I was having dinner with someone the other day and she said: I was never allowed to touch your stomach. We didn’t have those important experiences together.”

Turner, 28, said she felt homesick while living with Jonas in Los Angeles and Miami, revealing that the first thing she would do in every city they lived in was “find a British store and stock up on chocolate, comfort food for a month.” . that made her feel settled, but still didn’t compensate for the aspects of American society she found most disturbing. “The gun violence, the overturning of Roe v Wade… Everything was piling up,” she said. “After the shooting in Uvalde (May 2022), I knew it was time to get out of there.”

Now she has her own home in west London, although Turner said she is currently staying with a friend while the girls are with Jonas in the US, because being home alone without her children is “absolute pain” for her. Turner – who can now be seen in the ITV crime drama Jeanne – also revealed that before she became a mother, she was “very depressed and anxious” and often isolated herself.

“Now I think I live my life for them. “I want them to see that I have a social life, enjoy my work and thrive in my career and relationships,” she said. “I want them to see a hard-working mother. I come back and say, ‘This is why Mom was gone; it’s because she’s doing this for you, so Santa can come with a big bundle of presents.”

In September, a Florida judge declared Jonas and Turner guilty officially divorced and singleapproving a confidential, moderate agreement between the two, dividing their assets and detailing spousal support and custody of their children. In January, Turner dropped her “wrongful retention” charge when the ex did so entered into a co-parenting agreement.
