Kate Siegelknown for her standout horror performances in cases like The Ghost of Hill House And Midnight massbreaks new ground with her directorial debut in the latest V/H/S anthology, V/H/S/Past. The filmmaker/actor talks to Kyle Meredith about her role in the film, as well as her new animated series Dark cornersin collaboration with Stephen King, and Mike Flanagan’s upcoming adaptation of Chuck’s life. Although Siegel initially turned down the offer to direct V/H/S/PastFlanagan, her husband and frequent collaborator, encouraged her to take the opportunity. “It was exhausting, but worth every minute,” she says, looking back on her debut behind the camera. Siegel took a disciplined approach and set her own creative boundaries to ensure a unique take on found footage. While her segment plays with themes of time, Siegel describes it as “both scientific and spiritual,” something she also explores in her upcoming project Chuck’s life. Directed by Flanagan and adapted from the story by Stephen King. Chuck’s life follows a man with an ordinary life who becomes cosmically significant.

King also serves as Siegel’s screenwriter for the upcoming film Dark cornersan animated horror anthology aimed at a young audience. Inspired by her children’s growing curiosity about the genre, Siegel launched the project to provide age-appropriate chills without toning down the scare factor. “Let’s teach them the art of scaring,” she jokes, proud to include her daughter’s voice in a story based on real nightmares.

Looking ahead, Siegel’s directorial ambitions extend to complex, female-centric stories that combine horror, fantasy and philosophical exploration. “Queer, feminist, adult stories – that’s where I’m going,” she explains, inspired by a mix of Guillermo del Toro, Terrence Malick and Ridley Scott.
