Team of the week | Nitro wildcats

NITRO, W.Va. (WSAZ) – With two weeks left in the regular season, the Nitro Wildcats are ranked 5th in Class AAA.

Their only loss of the season came in overtime to Herbert Hoover.

The Wildcats entered their game Friday night against Winfield with a 6-1 record and looking to snap a four-game losing streak against the Generals.

With an offense that has put up big numbers all season, quarterback Josh Moody had another impressive night, throwing for 315 yards and three touchdowns.

“It’s definitely fun to be able to throw to our guys and know they’re going to make some action, and just throw the ball over everyone,” Moody said.

Nitro took a 35-28 lead with 8 and a half minutes remaining, and the Wildcats’ defense came up with big stops in the fourth quarter to secure the satisfying victory.

“Our defense held up,” Nitro head coach Boom McKinney said.

“Last year we had bad memories of not finishing games,” Moody said. “The fact that we finished this match strongly meant a lot.”

The win earns Nitro its first WSAZ Team of the Week trophy.

They close out the regular season with two road trips: at Sissonville and at Greenbrier East.

They think that if they get things right, they can play in front of their home crowd again in the postseason.
