A business owner is being praised for calling out an online reviewer’s inappropriate comment about a female delivery driver.

The review of Robinson’s Traditional Fish & Chips, near Trowbridge, Wiltshire, said: “Really hot food, always great from Robinsons, hot delivery girl too”.

The store replied: “Thank you for the kind review about the food, we will arrange for a man to deliver your food from now on.”

Owner Philip Robinson said: “It may seem harmless, but we need to put limits on these types of incidents.”

Robinson told BBC Wiltshire that he has a partner and a sister and “wish their employers would do the same”.

“I wouldn’t want them to feel uncomfortable,” he added.

The author of the review is kept private

The family business owner was only made aware of the review when the store’s manager texted him to say it had been posted on online food delivery platform Just Eat and then reposted on Facebook.

He explained that he felt compelled to respond, saying, “I feel like that should be normal.

“I’m sure it was an innocent compliment, but we need to set boundaries, and staff need to come to work feeling safe and knowing they won’t be harassed.”

‘I will always cry out’

Mr Robinson added: “As a small business owner we need our customers to keep coming back and I hope that hasn’t put them off ordering from us again but… that’s just the person who I am, if I see something that makes someone uncomfortable, I will always call it out.

“The safety of our staff is of the utmost importance to us.”

Mr Robinson said he was confident the incident would not repeat itself, but he said: “If that happens again we have the logs and myself or the store manager will ensure this is dealt with without any fuss delivered to them.” .

‘Happens far too often’

Fiona Oliver from Wiltshire Community Foundation, which launched a Women and Girls fund this year, said: “We applaud the response from Robinson’s for standing up for their employee.

The joint CEO said: “Harassment, stereotyping and discrimination targeting women and girls is far too common and is often referred to as harmless banter.

‘The impact of such behavior can really hit victims.

“We should not shy away from talking about these issues and calling out inappropriate behaviour,” Ms Oliver added.

The charity is hosting a men’s allyship event on November 22 to raise awareness of gender inequality and discrimination.
