It’s five days until Election Day and the presidential election continues to show that this is everyone’s race.

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are taking their final steps on the campaign trail, with both spending time in the key swing state of Nevada on Thursday, hoping to sway more voters ahead of Election Day. But as we near the end of the election cycle, many voters are not excited about election night.

Here’s where Trump and Harris stand in the polls, and how Americans feel about the election as we head into the Election Day weekend.

Who will win the presidential election?

Harris and Trump are tied at 48% the latest national TIPP Tracking Poll.

The race is also close in the key swing states. A new CNN poll conducted by SSRS found that the battleground state of Pennsylvania has a tie, while there is a new one Poll from Quinnipiac University gave Trump a one-point lead over Harris, according to reports from USA TODAY.

Voters left frustrated and anxious ahead of Election Day

The newest AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research A poll released Thursday shows that both Democrats and Republicans are equally frustrated with campaigns. Democrats, however, are more concerned. The poll found that 79% of Democrats said they were concerned, compared to 66% of Republicans.

And many Americans are not excited about the presidential election. Only 24% of independents, 37% of Democrats and 41% of Republicans said they were excited about the election.

When will we know who will be elected president?

That may take some time.

The anticipation around election night and the outcome does not mean that we will know for sure who the winner will be tomorrow morning. In 2020, President Joe Biden’s victory was announced by the Associated Press four days after Election Day.

Voters can vote during early voting and on Election Day for the candidates they believe are best for the political office they are running for. But it takes some time to count all the ballots, depending on the state and current laws regarding elections.

Federal law requires governors to prepare documents called certificates of assurance that begin the process of convening the Electoral College to vote for a president and vice president. Secretaries of State, or other official depending on the state, compile the election results of local and provincial governments so that the winner can be declared.

Representatives of the Republican governors of New Hampshire, Vermont and Virginia – all states leaning towards Harris in polls − told USA TODAY they plan to certify the results regardless of the winner. And top election officials in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin and North Carolina also said they would not be swayed.

Who is expected to win the presidential race?

In September, Allan Lichtman, a historian known for accurately predicting nine of the ten most recent presidential electionschose Harris as the next President of the United States and his prediction still stands just days before Election Day.

On Tuesday, Lichtman repeated his prediction of a Harris victory over his own YouTube channeldespite Harris’ lead in the battleground states shrinking and polls are close.

“Nothing has changed that could change my prediction that I made on September 5,” Lichtman said, “despite the polls.”
