This clever new multi-tool makes me rethink my whole approach to everyday ‘carrying’

Here at GP we talk a lot about EDC. When you do that, it’s ridiculously easy to get caught up in the “mundane” part of the term, evaluating a knife, multi-tool or some other small accessory, depending on how much use it provides on a daily basis.

As useful as a standard, mini or keychain multi-tool can be, perhaps nothing is as easy to set up and forget as a simple clip-based item.

Which leaves the other part of the equation, the “carry,” getting a short shift when you really shouldn’t. Because just like a professional athlete best option is availability (shout out to Bill Parcells), the most critical quality of an EDC item is a form factor that makes it easy to put away and forget about until you need it most.

Example: the new Nomad Scout EDC carabiner multi-toolwhich recently appeared on Kickstarter.

Form factor focus

I appreciate this project for a number of reasons. First off, Los Angeles-based creator Gabriel A. Keossian has done a good job putting together some crucial tools. Among the seven he touts are a fire-starting ferrocerium rod, a glass-breaking carbide tip, a small folding blade, a 1/4″ hex bit adapter and, of course, a bottle opener.

In addition to these useful features, however, I am even more excited about the form this multi-tool takes: a carabiner. For as useful as a standard, mini or keychain multi-tool can be, perhaps nothing is as easy to set up and forget as a simple clip-based item.
