Marijuana is a green-gray mixture of the dried flowers of the Cannabis sativa or Cannabis indica plant, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

The main psychoactive chemical in marijuana, which is responsible for most of the intoxicating effects people seek, is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. The chemical is found in resin produced by the leaves and buds of mainly the female cannabis plant.

The plant also contains more than 500 other chemicals, including more than 100 compounds chemically related to THC, called cannabinoids.

Will any of Florida’s cities rank higher in 2025? Possibly, here’s why

Depending on the election results, 2025 could be a better year for Florida cities when it comes to marijuana.

Florida voters will see recreational marijuana on the Florida ballot as a constitutional amendment initiatedknown as Amendment 3, on Tuesday, November 5. Amendment 3 seeks to legalize recreational marijuana, allowing people 21 and older to have up to 3 ounces and up to 5 grams of cannabis concentrate.

A supermajority, or 60% of the votes, is still needed.

How soon could recreational marijuana become legal if Amendment 3, “Recreational Marijuana Amendment,” passes?

Don’t get too excited and lighten up. Even if the amendment wins in the November election, marijuana won’t immediately become legal in Florida.

The process of turning a successful referendum into law can take several months. Even if the deal passes, the Florida Legislature must decide how to implement the law, including specific rules on the amount of marijuana that can be purchased at one time, potency limits, rules around marketing and other concerns that arise during the process .
