D.C. businesses are closing close to the White House before Election Day

(NewsNation) — Heading into the last weekend before the electionSome businesses in the country’s capital close their windows and doors in case of civil unrest.

On Friday morning in Washington DC, several business blocks away from the White House began boarding up their windows.

Although DC police said there are no known credible threats at this time,
The entire department will be deployed next week to ensure safety.

NewsNation saw firsthand how workers boarded up some storefronts — including chains like McDonald’s and small, local businesses — over concerns about possible protests or violence related to the election.

“We will not tolerate violence of any kind,” D.C. Police Commissioner Pamela A. Smith said at a news conference. “We will not tolerate the destruction of property. We do not tolerate illegal behavior. Violators will be arrested and held accountable.”

The police chief also recently said that 3,300 officers will be deployed across the district, each working 12-hour shifts and keeping a close eye on business districts and polling stations. If necessary, they can also call in agents from other nearby locations.
