The hit show Outlander has sparked fierce debate among the fanbase over its central character Jamie Fraser, played by Sam Heughan, with a focus on his most controversial mistakes in the series.

Jamie, revered as a favorite on the Starz series and married to lead actor Claire Fraser, played by Caitriona Balfe, has drawn fan criticism for his “horrible” and “humiliating” actions in several episodes.

Debates are flaring up on social media as enthusiasts parse his low points as they eagerly await the next episode of Outlander, with season 7 part two releasing in just a few weeks.

With the historical romance drama soon to close its final chapter based on author Diana Gabaldon’s critically acclaimed work, the cast and crew recently completed filming for the eighth season, prompting bittersweet reactions from viewers.

On Reddita user known as @pufferfish_hoop sparked a conversation with a thread titled “What’s the worst thing Jamie does?”

They wrote: “I’m currently reading Drums, and I feel like Jamie is making his biggest mistakes yet.

“I love Jamie and I didn’t like Roger (Richard Rankin) that much, but I’m really starting to get on his side now that Jamie is treating him so terribly.

‘Can’t Jamie stop hitting Roger for a moment? I’m at the point where they tell Roger that Bree was raped. Get a grip on yourself Jamie!”

They threw a question at their fellow fans, asking: “What do you think are Jamie’s biggest blunders?” (sic)

One fan replied to the comments and suggested: “Nearly beat Roger to death and sell him to the Indians. I was shocked when I saw that episode…’

A second fan, empathizing with Roger, weighed in: “The worst thing Jamie does is give Roger to the Mohawk. So okay, hitting him was a heat wave, but Jamie was a prisoner and a forced laborer and it’s horrific. that he would do that to someone else, especially on the basis of fairly weak evidence.” (sic)

Some Outlander enthusiasts focused their criticism on Jamie’s handling of Claire, with one saying: “It wasn’t really his fault, but because of his actions Claire had to go through perhaps the hardest time of her life alone. He wasn’t there to get her through the terrible sadness after helping Faith, I don’t think I would ever forgive (sic) that.

“Personally, I hated it when he beat Claire,” another viewer stated, and another agreed: “Maybe he beat Claire. (Understand it all, but if I had to pick one event right now, maybe it would be those are.)” (sick)

Meanwhile, another fan conveyed their discomfort, writing: “Berating Brianna (Sophie Skelton) after she was raped for being defiled and ruined really hit me differently. I understand – different time, etc., etc. – but reading/watching that as a modern woman was quite difficult for me.” (sic)

And others didn’t hesitate to address Jamie’s strategic missteps, with one fan musing: “I’m helping Bonnet get away and escape the executioner. Baaaaaad move buddy.” (sic)

Another frustrated fan simply wrote: “Handover LJ to the enemy!” (sic)

One disgruntled fan expressed his irritation: “Marrying Laoghrie and not backing out when he slept with Geneva!” While another chimed in with a similarly negative sentiment, adding: “Marrying Laoghaire. Duh…” (sic)

Following the closure of Lionsgate+ in the UK, new episodes of Outlander will be available on Starz and streaming on Prime Video channel MGM+ from Sunday 22 November. You must be an Amazon Prime member before you can sign up for MGM+.
