World-class performance by Curro Hazeldean’s relay team

Following unprecedented success on both the national and international stage, 2024 will be remembered as one of the most successful sporting years in Curro’s 25-year history.

Last week at the North West University Top 30 athletics competition in Potchefstroom, Inam Dlunge, Zattu Hlongwane, Adam Motloung and Matodzi Ndou of Curro Hazeldeana ran in 39.92 seconds in the boys’ U18 4x100m relay, the fastest result ever achieved by a youth team. boys relay in the world.

Notably, Curro’s Bayanda Walaza is South Africa’s first Olympic student, while Matodzi Ndou set a new SA under-18 record in the 110m hurdles last month.

“What makes the relay world record that much more extraordinary is that these types of records are usually held by national teams, and now a school team from Curro has achieved it,” said Pierre le Roux, executive director of Curro Hazeldean .

Led by coach Thabo Matebedi, who guided Bayanda Walaza to her Olympic relay success and sprint double at the World Junior Championships in Athletics, the quartet is part of Curro Hazeldean’s larger group of talented sprinters, which also includes 400m hurdles star Lesibe Dikgale .

“We set a South African record earlier this year at the ASA Grand Prix at the University of Johannesburg. We then set ourselves the goal of breaking the world record and giving the boys the gift of leaving school with amazing memories. It’s good to have players like Bayanda and Matodzi at Curro because they motivate others to achieve excellence with their sprinting talent. They show other young athletes that it is possible,” Matebedi explained the athletes’ feelings.

Living together in the school’s dormitory and training together day after day, even during school holidays, is an important part of the relay team’s record-breaking achievement. Curro CEO Cobus Loubser said nurturing exceptional talent under top coaches like Matebedi is part of a broader vision to make Curro Hazeldean the best athletics school in the country.

“A year ago we planned our sports strategy and ambitions and committed ourselves to creating Olympians. Since then, Curro’s sporting success has been astonishing, with Hazeldean’s team now becoming the world’s fastest U.18 relay team in history. We are exceptionally proud of these achievements. Curro continues to invest and build structures to harness the incredible potential of young talent in this beautiful country of ours,” said Loubser.
