Gridlocks brought Dhaka to a standstill ahead of a rally organized by Islamist group Ulama Mashayekh Bangladesh in the capital Suhrawary Udyan today (Nov 5).

Our correspondents reported severe traffic congestion at the Dhaka Elevated Expressway exit near FDC, Mogbazar, Farmgate, Karwan Bazar and Shahbagh.

“This is just a nightmare. I don’t know what they want to achieve in the future with this rally, but their program is costing commuters valuable time now,” said Tamim, a frustrated office goer who was among hundreds of others in the Khamarbari area.

“Who will pay for our loss?” he asked.

Abdur Rahman, an office goer, said, “This happens every time someone holds a rally in Suhrawardy Udyan or demonstrates by blocking the intersection in Shahbagh. General people suffer every time, but I don’t really care about the organizers of these meetings or conferences – political parties or whatever.

“Can there be no alternative at all?” he added as the CNG-powered auto-rickshaw he was in sat idle in a sea of vehicles in the Farmgate area.
