Rangers captain Jacob Trouba seriously injures Canadiens player Justin Barron with a questionable hit

New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba hit Montreal Canadiens defenseman Justin Barron with a questionable hit during Tuesday’s game.

It was a battle of the Original Six teams in Montreal on Tuesday night as the New York Rangers traveled north of the border to take on the Canadiens. Rangers started the match very quickly and were leading 4-1 after the first 20 minutes.

Things got really hot in the third quarter. With less than six minutes remaining in the final frame, Chris Kreider and Brendan Gallagher were each given two minutes for roughing, but the match improved shortly afterwards.

Just over seven minutes into the third period, New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba delivered a powerful blow to Montreal Canadiens defenseman Justin Barron as he tried to carry the puck into the opponent’s zone. Trouba appeared to catch Barron in the head, and the Canadiens blueliner also hit his head on the ice after falling.

Barron had been out for an extended period of time when the Canadiens’ track and field coach came on the ice to attend to him. Meanwhile, Barron’s defensive partner, Mike Matheson, defended his teammate, dropping Jacob Trouba’s gloves shortly after the hit. Barron left the game and did not return.

When the dust settled, Mike Matheson received a two-minute minor penalty for inciting, a five-minute major penalty for fighting and a ten-minute penalty for misconduct, while Jacob Trouba received a five-minute penalty for fighting and, surprisingly, no penalty for hitting the ball at Barron.

During his media presence following the 7-2 loss to New York, Montreal Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis, said that after watching replays of the impact, it was clear to him that the main point of contact was Justin Barron’s head.

Considering Jacob Trouba has had dangerous hits and been suspended twice in his NHL career, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Department of Player Safety looked into this play. However, since no penalty has been announced, DoPS will likely have a difficult time issuing a suspension or fine to Jacob Trouba, even though it is a questionable hit and, frankly, a dangerous decision on his part.
