Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa will brief the media on the state of readiness for the summer season on Monday, October 28, 2024.

The CoGTA briefing will cover National Disaster Management Centers (NDMC), Fire Department and support provided to affected municipalities.

“The Minister’s briefing highlights the importance of taking a multidisciplinary approach to preparedness for the upcoming severe weather this summer,” the department explained.

CoGTA says South Africa experiences disasters and hazards such as floods, heatwaves, snow, storms, droughts and fires every year.

“These disasters have a negative impact on communities, property and infrastructure and unfortunately sometimes also lead to loss of life.

“To this end, disaster contingency planning highlights the critical role that proactive preparedness plays in protecting our communities, maintaining our livelihoods, and ensuring our collective resilience.”

The Department believes that early warnings and early action save lives.

The NDMC, in partnership with the South African Meteorological Service (SAWS) and other key actors, continues to enhance the early warning system to reach wider society, focusing on vulnerable groups. – SAnews.gov.za
