The impressive prospect re-signs with the Seattle Mariners on a minor league deal

The Seattle Mariners’ minor league system has been praised over the last few months. The Farm has eight prospects ranked in the Baseball America Top 100 (the most in the league) and five players in the MLB Pipeline Top 100.

However, most of them are position players. Other than Logan Evans, who appears in the aforementioned Baseball America rankings, the Mariners have no prospects of being among any of the top 100 teams.

That could change this time next year. Michael Morales and Brandyn Garcia won the organization’s Jamie Moyer co-Minor League Pitcher of the Year award. And the organization’s top two 2024 draft picks, substitute pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje and prep right-hander Ryan Sloan, have yet to play a professional game for Seattle.

However, there is still a belief that the Mariners have no prospects of playing in the top flight compared to players in their position. So it’s good that one of the better prospects in the organization has just re-signed.

Right-handed reliever and former Detroit Tigers prospect Nick Davila has re-signed with the organization on a minor league deal, according to a Monday report from Baseball America Tigers reporter Emily Waldron.

According to the Waldron Report, Davila’s sweep and drop rates were among the best in the minor leagues last season.

Davila was originally signed by Detroit as an undrafted free agent out of South Florida in 2020.

This is the latest in a series of minor league contracts between Davila and Seattle.

Davila was released outright from the Tigers’ Single-A affiliate, the Lakeland Flying Tigers, on March 9, 2023. He signed with the Mariners organization on March 27, 2023.

Since then, Davila has made 35 appearances (18) starting over two seasons with the Mariners’ Triple-A affiliate Tacoma Rainiers, Low-A affiliate Modesto Nuts and High-A Everett affiliate AquaSox.

Davila has a 4.51 ERA in 22 appearances (18 starts) in 2023 with the Nuts, Rainiers and AquaSox. He had 109 strikeouts in 117.2 innings pitched.

In 2024, Davila was used solely as a reliever and only played in Everett. He made 13 appearances and had a 4.98 ERA with 28 strikeouts in 21.2 innings pitched. On June 13, he was placed on the 60-day injured list.

Seattle may be interested in replacement players, with several of them expected to go to arbitration in 2025. The Mariners typically go outside the organization to fill spots on their reserves. However, with Davila’s high-end sweeper and slider, there is a chance the Mariners could sign him in 2025, just like they did with Troy Taylor in 2024.
