Sri Lanka’s president is seeking help from Myanmar to free his nationals held by scammers

COLOMBO (Xinhua): Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Friday sought Myanmar’s assistance in securing the release of Sri Lankans held by cybercrime scammers and criminal gangs in Myanmar, according to a statement from the Media Division (PMD) of the president.

The President made the call during a meeting with Malar Than Htaik, Myanmar’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka, at the Presidential Secretariat, the PMD said.

A detailed discussion took place between Dissanayake and the ambassador, focusing on the release of Sri Lankans forcibly held in cybercrime camps in Myanmar, the PMD said, adding that several dozen Sri Lankans are currently reportedly being held in the camps run by criminal gangs in Myanmar.
