Armed robbers killed in shootout with police on the R59 in Alberton

Four armed robbers were killed in a shootout with police.

It is understood the shootout took place on the R59 in Alberton on Saturday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo said the provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, addressed the media at the crime scene.

Mthombeni said the suspects were on their way to commit a business robbery in the area and were killed during a confrontation with police.

“The suspects were about to rob businesses in the area. While the police followed them and tried to stop them. When they tried to stop them, they started shooting at the police. The police retaliated and in the process four suspects died on the spot.”

Mthombeni said police are scouring the scene as investigations continue.

Earlier this week, seven suspects were arrested by police and private security shortly after robbing a jewelery store in Clearwater Mall, Roodepoort.

KZN shooting

The gun battle comes a day after two suspects wanted for murder, attempted murder and robbery were killed during a shootout with police in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

It is understood the criminals were fatally injured during a confrontation with police in the Namibian region of Inanda in the early hours of Friday.

Gun fight

Police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda said members of the Murder Task Team acted on intelligence about the suspects’ hideout.

“When they introduced themselves as police officers, the suspects fired shots and during an inevitable self-defense gun battle, two suspects were shot and fatally wounded.

“The two cases of home invasion, one robbery with a firearm and the attempted murder cases were all committed in the Inanda area this month (October 2024), while the murder case was committed in June 2024,” Netshiunda said.
