National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to reduce misuse and keep communities safer

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – In a nationwide effort to address prescription drug abuse, Shawnee Co. participated in National Take-Back Day for prescription drugs.

Prescription drug abuse, storage of expired pills and unused medications remain a problem across the country and can become dangerous or fatal if they fall into the wrong hands.

Deputy Marcus Sheid with the Shawnee Co. Sheriff’s Office said it is always important to throw away these types of medications. Note that today it has become easier for people to dispense those medications, no questions asked.

“It is a safe alternative to leaving the drugs in the home where children and young people can access them, rather than throwing them in the trash or throwing them away,” says Sheid. “This allows people to drop off drugs anonymously and we will arrange that for them.”

Local locations included:

  • Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office at Soldier Township Fire Department
  • Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office at Mission Township Fire Department
