Army to set up camps in Mohammadpur to fight crime

In a bid to curb terrorism, extortion, robbery and theft in Mohammadpur area of ​​Dhaka, the army will set up temporary camps in every residential area from Sunday. Army personnel will work from these camps 24 hours a day to maintain law and order in the area.

Major Nazim Ahmed, deputy commander of the 23rd East Bengal Regiment, made this known at a press conference early Saturday at the army camp in Bosila. Earlier, the army launched operations across Mohammadpur, leading to the arrest of 45 persons.

Addressing the press conference, Major Nazim said, “To control the law and order situation in Mohammadpur, temporary camps will be set up in various residential areas from Sunday. One camp will cover two to three residential areas, from where army personnel will work to maintain law and order in the entire area.”

He added that the 23rd East Bengal Regiment conducted an operation on Saturday. A total of 45 criminals were arrested, including two involved in a daring robbery at Bosila Supershop. Several locally made weapons in their possession were also recovered.

Major Nazim noted that about 27 to 28 teenage gangs were identified in Mohammadpur, of which about 30 to 40 percent were concentrated in the Geneva camp area. Among those arrested were 15 to 16 “godfathers” or leaders involved in extortion and theft, causing hardship to office goers, students and general residents.

The army officer also noted that members of the RAB and the police accompanied them during the operation, and the arrested persons were handed over to the police station for further legal action.
