Outreach workers are ‘visible guardians’ on the streets of Leicester

As the workers discuss crime prevention with a group of students, Mr. Muir spots a young cyclist with a large cannabis joint in his hand and shouts, “Don’t do that.”

“You just challenge them,” says Mr. Muir, “because if you don’t challenge them, there will be anarchy…

“It’s no problem if they pull a knife on you because it just grows and it grows.”

Students Mustafa Seedat, 19, and Archie McNeill, 18, are impressed by the way Mr Muir de-escalated one situation.

“They really wanted to help us,” says Seedat, “to keep us safe on the streets.”
