Four suspected robbers killed in shootout in Alberton

Four suspected robbers killed in shootout in Alberton

Police say the four were intercepted while on their way to commit a business robbery in Johannesburg.

“As law enforcement agencies stopped the vehicle with four occupants, the suspects began shooting at the law enforcement officers,” Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo said.

A shootout and high-speed chase ensued, during which the suspect’s vehicle capsized in the middle of the road.

“All four suspects were pronounced dead at the scene and four unlicensed firearms and ammunition were recovered from the suspects.”

None of the law enforcement officers were injured.

Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni has attributed the foiled robbery to a collaboration between various law enforcement agencies and private security companies.

“Lives could have been lost had the suspects been successful in their criminal activities,” Mthombeni said.

“Thank you to the law enforcement officers who prevented all of this. This partnership will continue through the holidays and beyond.”
