Fiji’s boxing star Winston Hill (with belt)

Fijian boxing star Winston Hill has denied rumors that needles and methamphetamines were found in the dressing rooms at the South Pacific Boxing Promotion event in Nadi last Saturday.

Speculation arose that needles were seen outside the locker room of Rungi Zhou, who fought Ubayd Haider in a match in which Haider collapsed and was hospitalized.

In an interview with FBC Sports, Hill says this is all baseless speculation.

“There was speculation about needles being found in changing rooms, this is speculation and it is incorrect. No needles were found in my dressing room and in all the dressing rooms I had been in that evening. These are easily rumors and false news that have been put out.”

Hill praised Zhou as a disciplined and high-performing athlete.

“I met Zhou; he is a great boxer. It was no surprise what he did during the fight, that’s just how he trains. I saw him training with Mikaele Ravalaca a few weeks before the fight.”

He also expressed condolences for Haider, noting: “What happened to Ubayd was unfortunate, and I hope he recovers quickly.”
