Police make 25 arrests in shoplifting in Surrey

The Delta Police Department’s (DPD) Patrol Support Team (PST) along with the Surrey RCMP’s North Community Response Unit (CRU) recently teamed up to conduct a targeted operation aimed at reducing shoplifting in the Guildford Town Centre.

According to DPD, this joint one-day initiative resulted in the arrest of 25 individuals for various theft-related crimes.

The operation, coordinated in conjunction with mall security and nine participating stores, including loss prevention specialists from the US, was highly effective in reducing criminal activity, police say.

Among the recommended costs were:

17 counts of theft under $5,000

Possession of identity documents

Failure to comply with the probation period

Police also executed three arrest warrants, resulting in one person being taken into custody for violating probation conditions. Officers seized three weapons, including knives and pepper spray, and recovered more than $6,500 in stolen property.

“The success of this anti-shoplifting project demonstrates the value of the partnership between the Delta Police Department and our police partners in Surrey,” said A/Insp. James Sandberg, spokesperson for DPD. “Together we will increase our effectiveness in reducing crimes in our communities.”
