Second man convicted of kidnapping and stealing 123 guns from Benton Twp. Dunham’s store

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WNDU) – The second of two Benton Harbor brothers who pleaded guilty for their roles in a kidnapping and robbery that resulted in the theft of more than 100 guns from a sports store in Benton Township has learned its punishment.

Darnell Bishop, 32, was sentenced in federal court on Friday to 15 years in prison plead guilty to the crimethat made national headlines last year.

Bishop and his brother, 25-year-old Dontrell Nance, were both indicted in the theft of 123 guns from Dunham’s Sports on Napier Avenue last November.

As part of his plea deal, Bishop admitted that he and Nance kidnapped Dunham’s manager at gunpoint from outside the manager’s home, took him to a second location and convinced him to provide the emergency code for the store.

Bishop said he then entered the store and stole 123 handguns, which he carried in two large Yeti coolers. The police have now confiscated all firearms.

According to court documents, the big break in the case came in the form of a failed attempt to use the store manager’s CashApp account. That helped police quickly identify Bishop and Nance as suspects, ultimately leading to their arrests.

“Sir. Had Bishop’s criminal scheme succeeded, it would have flooded the streets of Southwest Michigan with illegal weapons,” U.S. Attorney Mark Totten said in a news release. “The proliferation of illegal guns is one of the causes of the gun violence epidemic we are experiencing in Benton Harbor, across the state and across the country. I am grateful to our local, state and federal law enforcement partners for their quick and smart response that prevented the worst.”

Nance was too sentenced to 15 years in prison for his role in the July crime.
