An Upstate man has been sentenced to 20 years for a slew of crimes, including burglaries

SPARTANBURG, SC (WSPA) – An Upstate man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for a string of crimes, including attempted armed robbery and burglaries.

Officials said that on Wednesday, October 23, 32-year-old Michael Trevor Barton, of Spartanburg, pleaded guilty to the following:

  • Four counts of first-degree burglary

  • Attempted armed robbery

  • Possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime

  • Four counts of grand larceny

  • Two counts of petit larceny

  • Two counts of receiving stolen property

  • Intentional damage to property of persons

  • Burglary of motor vehicle

  • Failure to stop the motor vehicle when directed to do so by a police vehicle

  • Use of the vehicle without the owner’s permission

  • Possession of stolen pistol

An investigation was launched on September 16, 2023 when a homeowner reported hearing someone in his wife’s BMW on Oakridge Court in Wellford. The homeowner went outside and saw Barton with a dog and an assault rifle in the vehicle.

It was reported that Barton held the homeowner at gunpoint and stole the BMW from the home. The victim was able to identify Barton to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Later in the investigation, officers learned that Barton had broken into the house the day before the car theft and stolen a spare key to the BMW.

Through additional investigation, law enforcement determined that Barton had committed a slew of property-related crimes in and around Wellford, Duncan, Lyman and Landrum.

Deputies said Barton also had a criminal history, including convictions for shoplifting, petit larceny, third-degree assault and battery, unlawful child neglect and second-degree domestic violence.

Barton was sentenced without parole, according to officials.

For each count of first-degree burglary, Barton was sentenced to 20 years in prison. He was also sentenced to 20 years in prison for attempted armed robbery.

All sentences will be served concurrently.
