Laurel Police Department Participates in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

LAUREL, Miss. (WDAM) – The Laurel Police Department was one of many law enforcement agencies across the country participating in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

Law enforcement agencies across the country opened their doors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. so people could return old or unwanted prescription drugs.

All medications will be properly disposed of by the Drug Enforcement Administration.

LPD Chief Tommy Cox said the department has been participating in prescription drug take back day for more than a decade.

Now younger officers are also taking action.

“We’re just taking them back from anyone who has them,” said Brooke Campbell, a current member of the Police Academy. “So we don’t put them on the street, flush them down the toilet and throw them away.

“Bring them to us so we can dispose of them properly. Just another part, you know, that shows we care. You know, make sure you come see us. You know, we can help you all. We will arrange everything.”

Cox said LPD collected more than 200 pounds of drugs.
