Russian troops thwart attempted cross-border attack from Ukraine, official says

Russian troops have thwarted an attempted new cross-border incursion from Ukraine into southwestern Russia, a local official said on Sunday, months after Kiev carried out a daring attack on its nuclear-armed enemy that Moscow is still struggling to stop to shout.

An “armed group” tried to breach the border between Ukraine and Russia’s Bryansk region on Sunday, Governor Aleksandr Bogomaz said, but was repulsed. Bogomaz did not clarify whether Ukrainian soldiers carried out the alleged attack, but claimed on Sunday evening that the situation was “stable and under control” by the Russian military.

Russian shelling killed three civilians in Ukraine’s southern city of Kherson on Sunday, local governor Oleksandr Prokudin claimed. Another Kherson resident died in a fire sparked by shells that hit a high-rise building, according to the Ukrainian Emergency Service.

Air raid sirens blared for more than three hours in Kiev overnight on Sunday, and city authorities later reported that “about ten” drones had been shot down. They said no one was injured. The Ukrainian air force reported on Sunday that it had shot down 41 drones launched by Russia over Ukrainian territory.

There was no immediate acknowledgment or response from Ukrainian officials.
