New York City may have sick leave for pet care

For many, their pets are like their children, but when an animal gets sick, their human parent often doesn’t have the luxury of taking time off work to care for him or her. In New York City, an amendment to the Earned Safe and Sick Time Act could give pet owners the right to use sick leave to care for their service or companion animals. If approved, the law would take effect 120 days later. If this passes, the law will expand family and personal leave in unprecedented ways.
