Calgary Weather: An unusual late season severe thunderstorm is moving through Alberta

A rare late-season severe thunderstorm developed in central Alberta Monday evening, prompting a warning from Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Hail, heavy rain and strong winds were all mentioned in the National Weather Service’s warning.

The temperature dictated the nature of the precipitation. The rain quickly turned to snow north of the initial front.

The effects of the late-season storm were still visible Tuesday morning.

Early Tuesday, light and scattered mixed precipitation continued to fall in the Calgary area and as of 7 a.m. visibility was slightly affected in the Calgary to Lethbridge corridor.

Sunshine will replace clouds all day Tuesday, but a cooler air mass will keep daytime highs in southern Alberta several degrees below seasonal average.

The forecast for Halloween will be a bit cooler, but with sunshine during the day it will feel slightly warmer than the ambient temperature.

The sun will set at 6.11pm on October 31st and when the children go outside the temperature will be closer to 0C.
