FBI launches independent investigation into ballot box fires

The FBI is conducting a “separate but parallel investigation” into the ballot box burning that broke out Monday morning in Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington.

The fires occurred approximately two hours apart, and sufficient evidence from both fires has established that there is a connection between the incidents. They are also connected to a separate October 8 incident in Vancouver, Washington. The incidents led to the destruction of hundreds of ballots.

Law enforcement officials have identified a suspicious vehicle seen leaving the polls in Portland. The vehicle is described as a “black or dark colored 2001-2004 Volvo S-60” with a front fascia missing. according to CNN.

“We don’t know the motives behind these acts, it appears to be a series of three at this point, but we do know that these types of acts are purposeful and intentional,” Amanda McMillan, assistant chief of the Portland Police Bureau, said Monday at a press conference. “We are concerned about this deliberate act that seeks to influence the electoral process. We are committed to stopping that type of behavior and that is what we are working on today.”

FBI officials told media that they are “working with federal, state and local partners to actively investigate the two incidents,” but did not indicate whether the incidents are being investigated as domestic terrorism. National Review reported.

The incidents come after the intelligence community warned Americans in July about the threat of explosives or incendiary devices hitting the ballot boxes in November. The Department of Homeland Security issued the warning after an unknown informant alerted them to online forums explaining how to attack the boxes.
