PS5 Slim Plates do not work with the PS5 Pro, despite being the same size

PS5 Slim Plates do not work with the PS5 Pro, despite being the same size

The PS5 Pro launch is still over a week away, but fans have already made an annoying discovery: the new console won’t work with players’ existing custom cover plates. Sony will eventually sell new units, but they won’t be available until sometime in the future.

This strange wrinkle was discovered by a Reddit user who shared it in a post that has since gone viral on the PlayStation subreddit. “I had a pair of cobalt blue plates so I decided to try them out on the Pro and I can confirm that the bottom plates match the Slim, but the top plates do not match as although they are physically the same size, the teeth that are on connecting the system are in slightly different places,” they wrote.

While they didn’t share an image of the PS5 Pro itself, which wouldn’t officially release until November 7, they did show comparisons of the Pro and Slim slabs. As the base plate fits, you can see where the differences in the plastic keepers differ between the two consoles.

“Sony has given the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro boards the exact same dimensions and dimensions, but has given them different interlocking prongs to deliberately make them incompatible, even though they are exactly the same,” tweeted YouTuber Jake Randall. “RIP everyone who says the only difference is the size of the racing line,” one commenter responded. “This was posted three weeks ago and everyone was in denial.”

The PlayStation community had debated for weeks about whether or not the plates would match due to inaccurate reports from the PlayStation Blog post unveiling the PS5 Pro. An image showing the compatibility of the console covers seemed to be definitive proof that the Slim covers wouldn’t work but it also seemed too ridiculous a move for everyone to be convinced.

Sony today confirmed the accuracy of the Reddit post’s discovery and that console cases compatible with the PS5 Pro will eventually be sold, but not in time for launch. “PS5 console covers are not compatible with PS5 Pro,” the company representative said told IGN. “However, players will be able to swap different console covers for PS5 Pro when they become available in the future.”

The confirmation will be especially heartbreaking for fans who managed to get a 30th anniversary PS5 slim but not the incredibly rare Pro model. Some were hoping they could still swap out the PS1-style covers on the Pro. No!
