Heidelberg lawyer pleads not guilty to buying 13-year-old girl

A Heidelberg lawyer, Carel Benjamin Schoeman, 35, has been accused of repeatedly raping a 13-year-old girl he “bought” from her 38-year-old mother.

The ‘mother’ allegedly forced her two minor children into prostitution, with Schoeman allegedly purchasing her 13-year-old child for R160,000.

Schoeman, a registered lawyer, is said to have made his first booking with the 13-year-old girl in September 2022. He made several more bookings between September and November until he reportedly approached the mother to ‘buy’ the child. .

Schoeman spent most of Wednesday with the mother in the dock at the Johannesburg High Court in Palm Ridge. He responded that he understood the charges against him and pleaded not guilty.

The 26 charges against this vile creature include rape, child abuse, pointing a firearm, conspiracy to commit a sexual act, using children for or profiting from child pornography and facilitating and/or assisting the creation and production of child pornography.

According to the complaint, Schoeman approached the mother to ‘buy’ the victim from her and they reached an agreement for R160,000. He allegedly made a deposit of R24,000 and also handed over a vehicle for her use.

He is said to have had sex with the child every day, either in a boarding house or in the mother’s flat in Heidelberg. When the victim refused to participate in a sexual act with him, he allegedly pointed his firearm at her and threatened her.

The lawyer is also said to have filmed the sexual acts.

“During the day, the victim was kept in a locked room without food, water or mobile phone.”

TimesLIVE reports that the mother is accused of forcing her daughters to have sex or participate in sexual conduct with various men in exchange for money before their 13th birthday. She is also accused of advertising her daughter’s services on internet sites such as Sex Trader and Red Velvet.

The 38-year-old mother faces 72 charges, including nine of child sexual exploitation, nine of rape, human trafficking, kidnapping, child abuse and producing child pornography.
