During a recent Associated Press trip to the Ukrainian-controlled zone closest to the nuclear power plant, two aerial bombs hit electrical infrastructure within minutes as night fell. Russia has repeatedly struck Ukraine’s power grid; the attacks have intensified this year. Underscoring the ongoing danger, electricity to the nuclear power plant was again cut off for three days as emergency workers struggled to extinguish the fire. It was at least the seventh time this year that the plant was without a power line or generator, according to the World Nuclear Energy Agency. “The intention is not for nuclear power stations to be disconnected from the electricity grid. It’s not designed for that. It is also not designed to function in cold stasis for so long,” said Darya Dolzikova, a nuclear policy researcher at the Royal United Services Institute in London.
