Just over two decades ago, David and Linda Frankel paid comedian and host Rosie O’Donnell $16.5 million for this sprawling estate overlooking Biscayne Bay on Miami Beach’s celebrity-studded Star Island, off South Beach.

Now the family of the recently deceased doctor and real estate investor and his former wife Fashion editor and sister of journalist Diane Sawyer, puts the Mediterranean-style mansion back on the market, The Wall Street Journal first reported. The asking price is a hefty $54 million, with the entry held by Liz Hogan of Compass.

Tucked away on a plot of more than an acre, the stucco and terra cotta roof structure was originally built in 1923. O’Donnell acquired the property for nearly $6.8 million in the late 1990s from a so-called religious organization known as the Ethiopian Zion Coptic Church. Other highlights include a spacious living room with wood-finished French doors that open to a covered veranda, as well as an elegant formal dining room and a remodeled kitchen with a large dining island, top-of-the-line Miele, Viking and Sub kitchen appliances. – No appliances and an accompanying breakfast nook. A chic primary retreat comes complete with a balcony and an office, while the top floor houses another kitchen and family room.

Although the house at 43 Star Island Drive is the only one currently available in the expensive neighborhood, there have been many recent sales to high-profile individuals. In 2023, LoanDepot CEO Anthony Hsieh shelled out $57 million for 27 Star, while rapper and record executive Rick Ross paid about $35 million for 37 Star. Ken Griffin also bought a nearly three-acre parcel of land he previously owned at 14 Star back from retired Yankees star Alex Rodriguez as part of a land swap deal, giving the billionaire hedge financier a total of 15 contiguous acres on the island of Miami Beach.
