We gave each product a score out of ten for taste and a score of ten for value, based on the price you pay per 100 grams and the meat content. Brands that cut back received a lower score.

Here’s how the steak pies scored out of 20…

Aldi Crestwood Family Steak Pie, £2.49 for 700g

Aldi's steak pie looked promising and was cheap, but didn't come out on top

Aldi’s steak pie looked promising and was cheap, but didn’t come out on top

This pie looked promising because it contained large chunks of meat, but the chunks of meat were gristly, fatty, and tough.

The gravy sauce was also strangely sweet and the pastry was quite stiff.

This pie also had the highest saturated fat content (7.2 percent) of all the pies we tasted.

It was also the only one to use meat from outside the EU.

This was the cheapest cake, costing just 38 cents per 100 grams, but you’re better off spending a few cents more on something else.

  • Value: 7/10
  • Total: 10/20

Morrisons 4 steak pies, £2.70 for 600g

The Morrisons steak pie received an overall rating of 9/20

The Morrisons steak pie received an overall rating of 9/20

These individual steak pies from Morrisons contained a decent amount of meat, which was tender to eat.

But the meat and gravy were bland and tasteless – and the dough was too stiff and thick. At 45 cents per 100 grams they were the second most expensive we tested and not worth the money money.

Asda Family Steak & Gravy pie, £3.35 for 700g

Asda's own brand cake came in at 10/20 overall

Asda’s own brand cake came in at 10/20 overall

This was the most beautiful cake, with crispy brown pastry and herbs on top, but it didn’t live up to expectations.

There was plenty of decent onion flavored gravy, but the pieces of meat were very small.

Because it was very sloppy, the dough was soggy and the pie fell apart when he tried to cut it and serve slices.

At 48 cents per 100 grams, this was the most expensive cake we tested and it wasn’t worth the extra cost.

Sainsbury’s Family Steak Pie, £3 for 700g

Sainsbury's Pie was declared the winner.

7

Sainsbury’s Pie was declared the winner.

The Sainsbury’s steak pie had a very flaky, crispy pastry layer and some large chunks of meat in a tasty gravy.

It was also among the lowest in salt and unhealthy saturated fat.

It wasn’t perfect because it didn’t look great, the base got soggy and the meat wasn’t spread very evenly throughout the pie. But this was by far the tastiest cake we tried – and at 43 cents per 100 grams it was definitely worth the money.

  • Taste: 8/10
  • Value: 7/10
  • Total: 15/20

Tesco 4 steak pies, £2.13 for 568g

Tesco's range of steak pies was rated 10/20.

7

Tesco’s range of steak pies was rated 10/20.

These Tesco pies were really disappointing, with a thick, stiff paste and a sloppy gravy with a synthetic onion flavour.

The meat inside was fine, but there wasn’t much of it. In fact, these pies contain just 23 percent beef – the least of any pie we tested. They also had one of the highest salinity levels.

And, annoyingly, the pastry from the cakes stuck to the inside of the cardboard box, so we had to scrape off bits of cardboard first. to cook.

  • Taste: 4/10
  • Value: 6/10
  • Total: 10/20

Lidl What’s cooking? 4 steak and gravy pies, £2.25 for 600g

The Lidl cakes received a rating of 14/20.

7

The Lidl cakes received a rating of 14/20.

The Lidl pies had a strong meaty smell and taste, like a real old-fashioned meat pie.

The dough was nice and crumbly on top and not too firm on the bottom.

There was a decent amount of meat, although some of it was fatty and chewy.

At just 38 cents per 100 grams, these were one of the cheapest pies – a decent meal for the price.

How to save money on your supermarket shopping

There are plenty of ways to save money at your grocery store.

You can look for yellow or red stickers on products, which indicate when they are discounted.

If the food is fresh, eat it quickly or freeze it for another time.

Making a list should also save you money because you’ll be less likely to make hasty purchases when you go to the grocery store.

Choosing your own brand can be an easy way to save hundreds of dollars a year on your food bill, too.

This means ditching the ‘best’ or ‘luxury’ products and instead opting for ‘own’ or value-for-money lines.

Many supermarkets have shaky fruit and vegetable programs where you can get cheap prices if they are misshapen or imperfect.

For example, Lidl runs its Waste Not scheme, offering 5kg boxes of fruit and vegetables for just £1.50.

If you’re on a low income and a parent, you could potentially get up to £442 a year in Healthy Start vouchers, which you can also use at the supermarket.

In addition, many municipalities offer supermarket vouchers as part of the Household Support Fund.
