Chris Coelen recently reflected on one of the “Love Is Blind” ideas that he felt the show would be better off without.

For Love is blindwhat’s happening outside the pods can be just as entertaining, if not more so, than what happens inside. This includes the reunion specials, which have sometimes been platforms for relationship revelations and even more drama. However, there was one Love is blind special that series creator Chris Coelen dropped out of quite early on. And he recently explained why.

Love is blind fans usually rely on reunion specials and social media posts to get updates on their favorite contestants’ love lives. But this was not always the case. In the first few seasons, audiences were able to go beyond the reunion specials to stay up to date couples up After the Altar. These functioned almost like the real epilogues of the show, keeping up with the daily life of the past Love is blind participants. This experiment ended after season four. However, Coelen was recently asked whether he could eventually bring the concept back.

“No. I’m not interested in that,” he said simply The Hollywood Reporter.

Coelen refuses to rise After the Altar for the same reason he abandoned the idea in the first place.

“It sounds fun to catch up, and that’s one of the reasons for the reunion now: It’s fun to catch up and see where some of your favorites have been,” Coelen said. “But if you’re in a After the Altar structure, it becomes more of a docuseries. And as many people know, docuseries are really driven by drama. And to elaborate on one After the Altar with (season 7 contestants) Brett and Tiffany or Zach and Bliss or whoever, where is the drama going to take place? It doesn’t feel real; it feels like you’re just making something at that moment, just for the sake of making it. It’s not an exciting idea for a show. It doesn’t really satisfy me as a producer. And I think even though people liked it to a certain extent, ultimately I don’t think it’s that great.

Chris Coelen reveals why certain moments take place off-screen in ‘Love Is Blind’

Not everything that happens Love is blind is displayed on the screen. Throughout the series, there have been pivotal moments that have also taken place between couples off-screen. This season for example Love is blind favorites Tyler and Alex had to deal with issues behind the scenes after Tyler dropped a surprising revelation about his family. Last season two Love is blind contestants, Jeramy and Laura, broke up due to a conversation Jeramy had with a former contestant.

Coelen addressed some of the criticism of the show regarding these off-camera moments. In the same interview, he reminded fans of this Love is blind I can’t film all the time.

“That’s a lot of time and we don’t want that. We think it is important that the participant has both time off camera and time on camera,” says Coelen. “And that they really get a full picture of who each other are before they go to the altar and make a decision. That’s why we try to help them gain all kinds of experiences. I can’t sit here and say I know what people are talking about off camera. So what I would say is that the question is actually best asked Tyler and Ashley and what do they think and how do they feel? And you will see that at the reunion. Tyler and Ashley have no obligations to Joey via Instagram. They just don’t do that. And Joey from Instagram, I’m glad Joey has an opinion, but that doesn’t really matter if Tyler and Ashley went through something or not in a way that makes sense to them.
