Cochrane is seeking input from residents on parks and recreation plans

The City of Cochrane invites residents to share their ideas for the future of parks, recreation, sports and culture in the community.

The city is developing a new master plan for parks, culture and active living and wants to ensure that it meets the priorities of residents.

Director of Parks & Active Living Michelle Delorme says they are trying to understand what types of infrastructure to prioritize for people.

“What types of activities do people participate in, whether it’s gardening, bird watching or reading books. The recreation spectrum is quite wide, so it starts with that gardening and can go all the way to competitive sports and everything in between.”

The city is asking residents to complete a survey and provide feedback so that a plan can be developed that reflects the needs of our community.

“The plan will help us understand where we want the community to be in ten years, and how we are going to get there. If we let the community take control by explaining to us and telling us what their needs are, then we will do that. to determine what that plan will outline for us.”

“We talk to all the organized community groups and understand what their registration numbers are and what their trends are.”

Delorme mentions that when they conduct these investigations, they often discover new areas to focus on.

“I think the one that has surprised me the most is that there are quite a few cricketers in Cochrane. So we don’t have an organized cricket group in Cochrane, but there are a lot of people who say they get involved and watch different activities and events, but Cricket has been the one that has surprised me so far.”
