Dragon Age 4 has all kinds of nuances; it is what it is when you’re a tactical RPG, and there are plenty of little special elements that we wish we had known about before we started playing.

1. You can mix up your companion’s three skills – and choose them wisely!

Each Dragon Age Veilguard Companion who you recruit to the team has six skills, but only three can be equipped at a time – and you must choose them carefully. You can’t switch them during battle, but we definitely recommend having at least one ally who can heal you. In addition, compare their skills with each other and your own. If you have an ally who can detonate divided enemies, make sure you give the other a splitting power!

Each companion has a bond that you build through giving gifts, doing missions with them and, most importantly, making choices they approve of. That bond essentially acts as their level; as it increases, they gain skill points to improve their skills.

The other thing worth knowing is that your choices become even more impactful later in the game. As in, you can make choices early on that may please or upset them a little, and later you can make choices that may delight or enrage them. We won’t spoil it, but it means you have to start thinking about your decisions more carefully; you have a lot more to lose. And if your companion gets the special Dragon Age Veilguard hardened condition… well, then it gets even more complicated.

3. Complete side missions as they arise, not later

Certain side quests can be automatically failed and canceled if you advance to certain points in the main story – and no, you won’t get a warning about when this will happen. That means that unless you want to miss the chance to do them, it’s wise to complete the side missions that arise after each major story, otherwise you might end up at a point in the story where that opportunity is lost. Oops!

While regular enemies aren’t much of a problem, bosses – especially high-level bosses – can be tough, and the best way to deal with them is with elemental attacks that exploit their weaknesses and avoid their resistances. Each companion generally has one element that imbues their attacks: ice attacks for Neve, fire attacks for Davrin, necrotic for Emmrich, and so on. By choosing your companions and your own skills accordingly, players can take down bosses far above your own level.

5. Plan your skill tree in advance and pay back generously

Players can see all skills in the skill tree in front of them, regardless of which of the three Dragon Age Veilguard Lessons you choose, it’s very important that you look at what lies ahead and plan accordingly – especially when it comes to choosing a specialization and working towards it in time for when you reach level 20. If you choose randomly you’ll end up with a haphazard and ineffective build, but by combining skills intelligently, players can emerge with something incredibly powerful.

Likewise, players should get into the habit of regularly redeeming skills, which you can do for free and at any time through the Character Menu. Test skills, return them, or simply use them to double a specialization so you can pay back a few basic powers and get the more advanced ones instead. Rook must be a fluid, ever-evolving character; that gives you the best chances.

6. Check all vendors for special items that provide unique improvements

All important ones Dragon Age Veilguard Factions have their respective sellers, who get more stock as you level them up, but there are also non-bonded sellers with some very interesting stocks. Dock Town in particular is teeming with these types of characters, selling various equipment and consumables – and even fruit that can grant permanent buffs to the player’s stats. If you come across a shopkeeper on your journey, no matter how modest, see what is for sale; it can save your life.

7. Locked ladders do not require a key, just an arrow

This is explained later in the tutorial, but exploring heroes will encounter these much earlier. As you walk through different parts of Thedas, you will see high ledges topped by ladders, collapsed and closed off by chains with padlocks on them. Despite the padlocks, you don’t need a key to open them. Just shoot an arrow into the lock itself and the latches will break, causing the ladder to fall and allowing you to climb to the ledge itself.

8. Learn the attack patterns of Ogres; they will occur often

Ogres – large brutes with horns and oversized jawlines – are a hostile type that may not seem particularly special at first glance, but understanding them is essential. Ogre variants prove to be a common boss type – especially if you use optional bosses – so knowing their attack patterns well can really make a difference in the way you proceed and deal with them.

9. Return to the lighthouse regularly for chats and upgrades

The lighthouse that serves as team hub and treehouse club may not seem like a big deal at first, but it’s essential that you get into the habit of returning there regularly, even if you’re not told to. Certain character dialogues will appear that are time sensitive (meaning you’ll miss your chance if you’re not quick), as well as new character missions and upgraded options in the Caretaker’s Workshop as a result of finding the special memories throughout the game – basically this one of the ways you can do that upgrade weapons in Dragon Age Veilguard. 10. When in doubt, let your allies do the hard work

A surprisingly effective method when you’re in trouble is to go on full defense. Do nothing but dodge, parry, and heal while your allies do the work. Allies like Davrin and Taash work well as tanks, but the basic idea is that, with two friends in charge, it’s fine to sit back in combat encounters and fight alone from a distance, or just let your friends target an enemy while you are looking for healing potions. . It’s a hard habit to break—most of us play at least a little proactively in action RPGs—but in extreme cases, it’s good to rely on your friends to do the heavy lifting, or to at least case to buy time until you are ready to get back to work.
