Man, 57, arrested after standoff ended early Friday in west-central Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – A man was behind bars in the Shawnee County Jail after he was arrested early Friday following a standoff in west-central Topeka, authorities said.

The arrested man, identified as Marvin L, Park, 57, of Topeka, was taken into custody around 12:30 a.m. Friday after the standoff ended in the 1500 block of SW Shunga Drive. The SW Shunga Drive location was just west of Washburn Avenue.

Authorities said the incident began around 5 p.m. Thursday, when officers responded to a crash reported in the area of ​​the Stormont Vail Events Center, located near SW 19th Street and Topeka Boulevard.

Police officials said officers were then led to the 1500 block of SW Shunga Drive — about a mile south and west of the Stormont Vail Events Center — where one person from the crash was inside a residence.

While police investigated the incident, a person fired shots from inside the home, officials said.

No injuries have been reported.

The standoff lasted into the evening hours Thursday before Park was taken into custody early Friday.

Authorities said Park was booked into the Shawnee County Jail at 6:50 a.m. Friday in connection with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer; criminal threat; battery; driver’s duty to report an accident; and interference with a law enforcement officer.

Park was being held in the Shawnee County Jail without bond as of Friday morning.

Topeka police officials said they were not searching for any other individuals as of early Friday and that the department’s Criminal Investigation Bureau was continuing to investigate this incident.
