On Saturday evening, a fire broke out on the second floor of a residential building in Phase 11, opposite the local petrol pump, causing panic in the area.

Residents noticed smoke coming from the building around 4:30 p.m., after which they quickly alerted the police and fire brigade.

No one was on the second floor, where the building owner, who operates a store nearby, had stored blankets and other materials under a temporary shed. That’s why no one was injured.

According to Amrinder Singh Sandhu, Assistant Divisional Fire Officer (ADFO), Mohali, Mohali said that after receiving the distress call, they immediately sent three fire tenders to the spot. “Our team managed to quickly control the fire and prevent it from spreading to the floors below and adjacent buildings,” he added.

Although the fire was quickly brought under control, the material damage is still being investigated. Authorities are trying to confirm the exact cause of the fire, although initial findings point to an electrical short as the likely cause.

Sandhu said the fire appeared to have been caused by a short circuit, adding that the fire spread quickly due to a supply of blankets stored at the premises.

However, the building owner claimed that the fire was caused by an air cracker that entered the second floor.

Sandhu explained that three fire engines – one stationed at Phase 11 for the festive season and two from Phases 1 and 8 – had been mobilized to control the fire.

Local officials including DSP City 2 and Phase 11 SHO also reached the accident site to assess the situation.
