Jaguars Coach Reveals Key Insight on Offense

The Jacksonville Jaguars have had a lot of problems on the offensive side of the ball. However, the Jaguars offense has played solid football in the fourth quarter of three of their last four games.

Although Jacksonville has won the last four games 2-2, they have scored more points then than the previous four weeks.

Jaguars offensive coordinator Press Taylor believes the team’s performance is not indicative of the team’s confidence in each other.

Taylor noted that he is confident in the players’ ability to make the play call and that the players are confident in their ability to do so.

“Yes, I think so,” Taylor said. “I mean, I think every time you see those guys you believe they can do it, but until they’re in the position until they do it, you really don’t know,” Taylor said. “There were probably times when I was reading the call sheet. I just call it ‘Ron Burgundy’ and read 11 staff members, and everyone goes, ‘You don’t have 11,’ and so we only have 12.

“So then sometimes we just mention a concept and say, ‘You guys are going to line up where we need to stand, go where we need to go, in order to execute this concept. ‘ We ran, I think we had a big third-down conversion to Brenton Strange with Evan (TE Evan Engram) and Brenton in a position they weren’t in when we practiced that, but obviously we didn’t have anyone else. They had to go, they know exactly what to do, they understand the concepts.

Taylor believes the unit’s continued confidence does not come from their success on the field as they have had little. However, he believes their success comes from the work they have put in since the offseason.

This, as well as the veteran presence of the offense’s best players, contributes to the confidence the offense has shown over the past four games.

“When we get back to work in April, we’ll do a lot of this stuff where we’ll just call concepts, not formations, and you’ll figure it out,” Taylor said. “Then that work comes in, but again, being in a second year, I think it obviously helps Brenton to be next to Evan, them talking through the concept, and Trevor communicating in the group. There are a lot of those things that we had confidence in. but of course it is a big deal for all of us to see it emerge and blossom at the critical moments.
