Dennis Allen’s ideal replacement for Saints is also in the right place, with no local hero returning

Dennis Allen’s ideal replacement for Saints is also in the right place, with no local hero returning

Dennis Allen had to go. He is a great defensive mind and should find work as a defensive coordinator quite easily this season. Allen made the most of his opportunity to make it a second time N.F.L head coach, but chances are he will never hold that job title again in his coaching career. It made sense at the time to promote Allen from within after Sean Payton abruptly retired, but a lot of time has passed.

The New Orleans Saints are now the second NFL team to be led by an interim head coach for the rest of the time, joining the equally pathetic Jets from New York. While Gang Green has an intriguing roster in some capacities, Mickey Loomis has set the can aside long enough. New Orleans needs a complete rebuild. The right head coach to bring them back to prominence is available.

I would say that once the Cleveland Browns idiotically fire their head coach in Kevin Stefanski so that he immediately becomes the top candidate for the Saints gig. Coming from the same coaching structure as offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, I would hazard a guess that the best part of his team would be retained. Derek Carr isn’t great anymore, but he’s better than what’s in Cleveland.

I will also go out if the saints would hire Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady, that could prove disastrous. It doesn’t matter that he’s having success in Orchard Park this year, and it doesn’t matter that he was really good at calling offensive plays for the 2019 LSU staff. Don’t you remember how ill-equipped we were as a play caller when he was in division on the Carolina Panthers?

Brady might be a great NFL head coach one day, but someone who has seen some stuff is preferable here.

Again, I may be wrong about this. The Saints may also not be interested in hiring. Stefanski may not become available, and Brady may not want to come back and work for this team at this time. There’s also a chance that Brady is the best thing to happen to New Orleans since Sean Payton. I’m just going off the vibe that I’m a fan of their biggest rival. What renting would yield Atlanta Falcons Fans feeling uncomfortable?

Stefanski has already done something I didn’t think was possible, reach the playoffs multiple times in one tenure leading the Browns. Not only that, but he also won a playoff game with that franchise, the only one to date since the existence of the Baltimore Ravens. Brady can be a great head coach in the future, but he needs to go to a place that doesn’t require a complete and wholesale rebuild.

I would expect Allen’s successor to get the green light for the Saints to draft their first quarterback in the first round since Archie Manning. Yes, it’s been so long. Once this team gets a new identity, the Saints can get back to competing in the same division that the Falcons are starting to run away with. Atlanta could totally lose next week on the road to New Orleans because it’s Atlanta.

At this point, I would consider hiring someone like Stefanski or Mike Vrabel over a rookie coach.
