Julia Roberts under fire for inviting women to vote differently than men

There are just five days left until Election Day, with both campaigns feeling immense pressure with whatever final strategy they implement to win over voters. The progressive evangelical group Vote Common Good tried to help Vice President Kamala Harris with an ad that was poorly received by some.

The ad shows a woman wearing an American flag hat and looking sheepishly at her husband as she heads to a voting booth. She highlights the Harris-Walz option and smiles at another woman voting. Then her husband asks her if she made the “right choice,” to which she responds, “Yes, I did, honey.”

“In the only place in America where women still have the right to choose, you can vote any way you want, and no one will ever know,” Roberts says in a voiceover. “Remember: what happens in the booth, stays in the booth.”

“This is insulting and demeaning to women. Do you hear yourself? Very disappointing @JuliaRoberts”, the group Pennsylvania Women for Change wrote.

“I can tell you that I have decided who to vote for, and my husband knows it. We argue – we don’t tell each other how to vote,” said another user wrote. “This ad in itself would almost make me vote for Trump.”

Still, others saw no problem with the ad.

“What an incredible ad. Very well done,” said one user commented.

Harris has relied heavily on celebrity support since launching her campaign in July. Artists Lizzo, Beyonce and Cardi B have appeared at her gatherings, but not all of them have given musical performances. Others, like Taylor Swift, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jane Fonda, have offered simple messages of support without challenging the vice president.

President Joe Biden was running for re-election until July, when he announced he was ending his campaign. Biden immediately endorsed Harris, as she is the only candidate who can legally use what Biden has raised.
