‘I save a lot of money’

As rising global temperatures lead to rising energy bills, many homeowners are looking for ways to reduce energy costs. Replace your current HVAC system with one heat pump energy could decrease use by 31%-47%as described in a report from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

The scoop

Traditional HVAC appliances, including radiators and AC units, use a lot of energy to generate heat and change the temperature of the air in your home.

A heat pumpHowever, heat is moved rather than generated – a much more energy efficient method of controlling temperature. Despite its name, one heat pump both heats and cools your home.

Energy.gov explains it this way: “During the cooling season heat pumps move heat from your home to the outside, and during the heating season they move heat from the cool outside air to your warm home.”

How it works

The initial cost for heat pumps can range from $4,000 to $8,000, but by looking for competitive prices and taking advantage of government rebates or tax breaks from the Inflation Reduction Actthis number can be greatly reduced.

The IRA offers up to $2,000 in tax credits to homeowners who install heat pumps and up to $8,000 in rebates to low-income households.

The long-term savings of a heat pump also helps offset the initial costs. If you take additional steps to weatherproof your home, just like installing better insulation, the savings increase over time.
