Three New Orleans Saints who won’t survive the trade deadline following the firing of Dennis Allen

Three New Orleans Saints who won’t survive the trade deadline following the firing of Dennis Allen

The inevitable is finally true: Dennis Allen is out if the New Orleans Saints head coach. And honestly, it should be a surprise. Not only are the Saints on a seven-game losing streak, but a loss to the Carolina Panthers is simply unacceptable.

A lot went wrong for the Saints after they started the year 2-0, averaging over 40 points. They couldn’t stay healthy and their defense simply flopped. Allen is not the only one to blamebut he’s definitely at the center of it all.

I am not in favor of firing a coach mid-season. First, it can’t get any worse than it is now, and second, not much will change after that. And it is not the case that you immediately hire a replacement.

That said, it was clear that Allen had to go. He had to go now because it seemed like he started to lose the respect of the locker room. After the first two games masked the internal issues, they became apparent during the Saints’ losing streak.

This was a coaching change that simply couldn’t be avoided. As players became frustrated, keeping Allen around would clearly do more harm than good.

And with Allen out of the picture, the Saints should already be calling to move some players for the full rebuild. Here’s who the Saints are more likely to move Tuesday’s trade deadline as a new coaching regime heads to the Big Easy.

by Marshon Lattimore The name has been circulating quite a bit in trade conversations lately. It makes sense for the Saints to part ways with Lattimore. He has been the Saints’ No. 1 corner since entering the NFL. He is a player who needs to be monitored and kept on the move.

The biggest problem for Lattimore lately has been health. He hasn’t played a full season since 2021 and hasn’t played more than 10 games in the last two seasons. He has only missed two games this year.

The Washington commanders are a team to watch in making a move possible for Lattimore. They have said they need more experienced leadership and corners. Lattimore meets both requirements. The question is how much the saints will ask for him.

When I’m the commander, I don’t necessarily get desperate. If it doesn’t require much tap capital, I would take the plunge. Otherwise, I’d let a team like Dallas, Baltimore or Minnesota go after him.

It wouldn’t make sense for the commanders to give up a lot because they still have needs that need to be met. And while this season has been a success, missing out on young talent in the draft isn’t worth it at this point.

Chase Young should definitely be in a new team before Tuesday. With the number of teams in need of emergency help, the Saints would be foolish not to fire Young.

He may not be worth more than a third- or fourth-round pick, but it’s better than nothing. Last season, the Commanders sent Young to San Francisco and it was a mutually beneficial deal. I would expect the Saints to do something eerily similar.

Young has also had some health issues during his career, although playing last season and not missing a game yet this year could increase his value.

Like Lattimore, the Commanders could look to bring Young back, especially in a Dan Quinn defense, Young could thrive. Detroit could be a player, but they need help shutting down Aidan Hutchinson. The good news is that Young is on a one-year deal and would likely get a similar deal barring a breakthrough second half of the season.

Whichever team gets Young before the deadline could look to develop him further into a long-term piece that is affordable.

This is a long-term commitment, but it can pay off in the end. Alvin Kamara is the Saints’ best chance to get a third-round pick or better in a trade.

Possibly the only team in mind desperate enough to give up a lot for Kamara is the Cowboys. They’ve faltered with Derrick Henry and haven’t had decent production from their backs yet this season.

If Dallas is aggressive, like Jerry Jones claims His team will come over the next day, they will look at Kamara. He would be a perfect fit for Dak Prescott and this offense. Just look at what he did with the Cowboys in Week 2.

He had 180 yards from scrimmage and four total touchdowns, including 115 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Although he hasn’t scored a touchdown since Week 6, imagine how much better Dallas’ offense becomes overnight with a Kamara deal.

I could see the Cowboys even offering a second round pick to get Kamara because they’re actually winning now and don’t need as much draft capital.

Dallas needs to get a deal done and do it fairly in every way possible. It could be the Saints’ best opportunity to maximize Kamara’s value.
