“They’re afraid it’s going to be unsafe and too loud,” says Paige, the event’s lead creator and producer, as her team hands over a bright pink $500 quote. “With a lot of our crew busy communicating with the deputies, things are getting a little out of hand, so we’re trying to keep it as civil as possible.”

Law enforcement officials stated that the group did not have a permit to host the event and that they could no longer hold it in the park. This led to a spontaneous action Timothée Chalamet parade through the village, with the event moving a few blocks to Mercer Playground. Roberto, the bodyguard, says the team set a Plan B location for this very reason. As the crowd marched, some attendees lingered near the arch. They were confronted with aggression, with officers shouting into their megaphones: “If you don’t clear the area, you will be summoned.” One of the Chalamet lookalikes was handcuffed. The creators of the event believe he may have been ousted as an incorrect member of the organizing party.

“It was unfortunate that we got a $500 fine, but it’s the price of culture,” Gilbert says. And while the contest was a clear success, Gilbert says the team has no plans to host any more lookalike contests in the future.

Amid the chaos, Miles, dressed in a Willy Wonka costume, took home the coveted cash prize and trophy. Below, we spoke with several Timmy-T lookalikes and attendees about the seductive and disorienting spectacle of the 2024 Timothée Chalamet Lookalike Contest.
