MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A Mobile man pleaded guilty Monday morning in connection with the shooting death of a 14-year-old boy.

Kelvin Estell, 25, is the first of six defendants to plead guilty to murder, according to the district attorney’s office.

On February 15, 2022, Daniel Blackmon was shot and killed in a home on Cheshire Drive.

Police said Blackmon was outside the residence when a vehicle pulled up and multiple shots were fired, hitting the teenager.

Blackmon was not the intended target, investigators said.

Estell was one of two defendants who went before the jury Monday morning and instead pleaded guilty to murder.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Estell was sentenced to twenty years in prison for murder, twenty years for firing into an occupied building and ten years for firing into an occupied vehicle.

He was also sentenced to ten years in prison after pleading guilty to breaking and entering a vehicle in a separate case.

These sentences will work together.

The jury trial of co-defendant in the murder case, Kentrell Freeman, began Monday morning with opening statements.

FOX10 News will continue to monitor the results.

The other four defendants are Teriana Thompson, Ryan Kidd, Deontae Kimbrough and Sidney Collins.

A trial for Thompson, Kidd and Collins is scheduled for November.

Kimbrough’s trial is scheduled for February 2025.
