24-year-old man arrested by police in connection with investigation into suspected hit-and-run in Dublin, which is due to go on trial

The incident occurred shortly before 2pm and the van involved failed to arrive at the scene on Cloverhill Road

The 24-year-old is due to appear before Blanchardstown District Court at 10.30am.

A junior associate of Mafia veteran John Gilligan remains in a serious condition in hospital after he was hit by a van in Clondalkin on Sunday afternoon.

The incident occurred shortly before 2pm and the van involved failed to arrive at the scene on Cloverhill Road.

Gardaí were investigating whether the driver of a van had hit a pedestrian in his 20s and then backed into him.

The vehicle involved in the incident did not arrive at the scene, but local police arrested a suspect on Sunday evening as part of their investigation.

The victim is a junior associate of veteran criminal John Gilligan, who is now 70 and lives in Spain, where he received a suspended sentence last year for drug smuggling offences.

In an earlier statement, gardaí said they were investigating “a serious road traffic collision which occurred on Cloverhill Road, Clondalkin, Dublin 22, on Sunday afternoon, October 20”.

“A 20-year-old man was arrested yesterday evening, Sunday 20 October, and is currently in custody under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a south Dublin police station,” gardaí said.

“Investigation ongoing.”

In an appeal issued at the weekend, gardaí said the incident “involving a pedestrian and a van occurred at approximately 1:45 p.m.”

“The male pedestrian (20 years old) was taken to hospital for treatment with serious injuries.

“The car did not remain at the scene.

“The scene was assessed and the road was reopened to traffic.

“Gardaí are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward. They are also looking for any camera footage, including dash cam footage, of people traveling in the area at the time to assist with the investigation.
